Summer Sonic

Yo, back safe from Okinawa. Good times, good times. I'm going to try to put up some new photos and stuff every day for the next few days (until Brian gets here on Sunday I guess). For you, it'll be like you actually went to Okinawa yourself. And for me, it'll be like reliving the past week all over again, which is pretty passe anyway.

Right then. First, Aug 13-14. Summer Sonic, Osaka. Saw a bunch of bands, some I didn't know and were mostly unimpressive; some I did and were awesome. I'm not going to write it up coz Dan did such a nice job. He has some good photos of it too, so if you think mine suck then go stab me in the back like the rats you are and look at them.

The Caesars. Crappy picture from too far back, but they're a shitty band and I didn't want to get any closer.

Death Cab for Cutie were excellent. Cool personalities, excellent voice.

Some jokers called Him. The singer was the lovechild of Bowie and Ozzy, but it was kind of ridiculous to have the whole vampire look going when the other members of the band are Korn-a-likes.

Yeah baby.

Bloc Party were really good too, mostly because everyone was really into it.
I'm still not entirely convinced how much I like them.

Weezer! They're old.

Oasis. Liam Gallagher was a dick. Before a song, he calls out... "This one's for all you Japanese. Get out yer chopsticks." Dick.

Orange Range! I went to see this just so I could brag to my students. Of course, this photo could be anyone, really.

TV on the Radio were good too. The low end was fucking scary. Sound better on record though.

Arcade Fire were excellent and hilarious. They started with Wake Up, and the sing-along chanting was a perfect way to get the crowd into it. Really good.
Then they played Laika, and two dudes on the left of the stage started doing percussion on a football helmet and then put on the helmet, climbed the scaffolding beside the stage and banged on that too.
See these guys.

Interpol were Interpol. Same set I saw in Osaka earlier in the year, but sound wasn't as good and I didn't have the chance to blind Paul this time.

Last was Roots, who were all absolute virtuosos and make me cry, and then my boy Q-Tip!
MY NAME IS Q!!!!
He was so stoned it was almost not funny. The most random, disconnected, nonsensical gig I've ever seen. But it was quality when there was actually something happening.

For too long, puritanical love-monkeys have been talking ill of one of our little planet's most time-honoured gastronomical past-times. Have YOUR say in reclaiming your right to eat your friends. If god had meant us not to eat human flesh, why did he make it so damn tasty?
